We begin at 9:00 a.m. from Hotel Loberías del Sur, heading towards Puerto Aysén, a town that was once the first Regional Capital and the main port of the Aysén Territory. We will cross the iconic Presidente Ibáñez Bridge, the longest suspension bridge in Chile, inaugurated in 1966. It spans the mighty Aysén River and was declared a National Monument in 2002. We will then visit the waterfront promenade and the town’s main square, home to some of the oldest buildings dating back to the early days of the territory’s colonization.
Next, we will continue to the historic building and memorial site of the First Police Station of Puerto Aysén, where visitors can see the preserved room and facilities that, in the early 1960s, housed the institution’s martyr and 20th-century hero, Lieutenant Hernán Merino Correa. This visit will take us on a journey through the early years of colonization and the social and cultural heritage of Puerto Aysén.
Our journey will then follow the Simpson River towards Lake Elizalde, where we will enjoy a traditional lunch in a natural setting surrounded by mountains and lakes. Afterwards, we will continue to the city of Coyhaique, the regional capital since 1974. Here, we will visit the Aysén Regional Museum, which received the Leading Culture Destinations Award in Berlin as the world’s best new museum in the Latin American category in 2022, in recognition of its outstanding work in safeguarding and sharing the heritage of the southern region.
We will also visit the city’s main square, notable for its unique pentagonal shape, where ten of Coyhaique’s streets converge. Around the square, you will find a variety of craft shops and local products. Finally, we will begin our return trip to Puerto Chacabuco through the Patagonian Andes, arriving at Hotel Loberías del Sur around 6:00 p.m.
